Product Description

Product Description

Alex McKnight rarely ventures out from his home these days, even to spend time at his friend Jackie's Glasgow Inn. Even as he lets Jackie force him out one night for a poker game at a stranger's house, Alex is certain it's a bad idea. And when the genial atmosphere rapidly deteriorates, he starts to think maybe he was right. Then three masked, armed robbers burst through the door, and things get a whole lot worse. Soon Alex's three closest friends are implicated in the robbery, and Alex finds himself the object of hostile attention from the victim. As events spin out of control, it becomes clear that somebody is not telling the truth, and has put them all in terrible danger...

4.0 out of 5 stars Mean McNight, 28 May 2003

Set around the Great Lakes this features the ever reluctant Alex McNight. He gets drawn into things when a card game is raided by armed burglars. The plot twists and turns as the insular hero learns more and more about his closest friends, and himself. The author comes up with pretty memorable characters as it speeds along leading to a nice twist at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good holiday reading, 6 Jun 2009
By Julia Flyte - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is the kind of book you pick up on a weekend away at a friend's holiday house when you realise that you've left the new Lee Child that you were planning to read behind at home. You haven't read any of the others in the series but it looks reasonably intriguing and it's fewer than 200 pages, so you figure there'll be time to knock it off before you have to head home on Sunday. The engaging writing style quickly pulls you in and you find yourself enjoying the narrator's witticisms. It's a story about a former cop, living in remote northern Michigan, who is present when an armed robbery takes place at a poker game that he's attending. He is drawn into investigating it when his friends are implicated. The stakes go up when one of the robbers is found dead. The story unfolds at a satisfying pace and you annoy your spouse by refusing to go for a walk, preferring to stay in and keep reading. There's an icy silence all the way home in the car but at least the book was good, similar in feel to Simon Kernick.

4.0 out of 5 stars South of Somewhere Great!, 23 Jun 2006
By Sam "samueltyler" (Reading, Berkshire) - See all my reviews

Action.

Fast paced action.

Probably the best way to describe this short but interesting novel by Steve Hamilton. 'North of Nowhere' is the fourth book in the Alex McKnight series and Hamilton is certainly in his stride by now. We join McKnight soon after the events of the past novels. He has become a recluse after being beaten up one too many times as a PI. Only is best friend can get him out and that is for a poker game at a stranger's house. Everything is going well until three armed men decide to join the party and McKnight once more becomes involved in events he can do little about.

McKnight is a great character and it's the force of his will that is the strength of this book. By being aggressive and having a no nonsense attitude McKnight pushes the narrative ever onwards. Without him the story itself is weak and the novel short but because of him it becomes an excellent, if simple, tale.

'North of Nowhere' is not the best McKnight story and should act as a warning to Hamilton that churning out fun but essentially empty stories will leave you unpopular in the end. However, for now the series is still strong and I for one look forward to the next installment.
